Ust-Kamenogorsk is the capital of the Eastern Kazakhstan region The population of Ust-Kamenogorsk is about 350 thousand people.
The city was established in 1720 according to the order of the Russian Czar Peter the 1st, who sent a military expedition headed by major Ivan Vasilievich Liharev in order to base the fortress for the protection of the Russian Empire's boundaries. Unfortunately, almost nothing remained from the most interesting historical memorial called Fortress of Ust-Kamenogorsk, with the exception of a few fragments of mounds from the moats, which are 600 meters long, and the former Troizkai Church, which is the only building left from this time period.

Of course things have changed quite a bit in Ust-Kamenogorsk since then! Modern bridges have been built, wondrous statues rise high above the ground, and many modern buildings dot the landscape. The main attractions of Ust-Kamenogorsk are the building of the Town's College (now it's the ethnographic museum), the House of People (now it's the Jambul Theatre), The Pokrovsky Cathedral, The Jail Castle, and homes of two gold manufacturers: home of Menovshikov (now it's Regional Printing House) and home of Valitov (Now it's Altai's Branch of The Geological K.P. Satpaev Institute).

In addition to the wonderful sights of the city, Ust-Kamenogorsk has everything for those active outdoors. Hiking, fishing, a variety of white water rivers, motorcycle and auto tours, and bicycles all offer great ways to see the outdoors here.

The Altai is noted for its extremely beautiful, swift, crystal-clear rivers, which abound in grayling, lenok and taimen. The rivers rush among snowy mountains, Alpine meadows and cedar taiga. The banks are rich with berries, mushrooms and wild beasts. There are a lot of apiaries with its famous Alai honey. The tours include both the most complicated for good sportsmen with whitewater experience, and those recreational tours to have a good time with your friends or family, including children.
Moreover you can choose lengthy (over 250km) or short tours of various complexity. From the city it is convenient to take river trips to the upper Katun, Kara-Alakha and Ak-Alakha Rivers.
